ÿþMD-11 FLYING TIPS FOR THE INEXPERIENCED PILOT
1. Do not exceed 260 kts indicated speed in climb and 280kts in cruise.

2. Climb steeply after take-off to keep the speed down, reduce throttle as soon as the wheels are up.

3. At 35,000 feet 260 kts indicated is about 500 miles per hour ground speed.

4. The autothrottle is a bit quirky but it does work. Ditto the autopilot.

5. Set the numbers on the autothrottle and autopilot before take-off but do not
switch them on until after take-off.

6. Start your descent to land from a long way out. From 35,000 feet you need to
start descent about 70 miles out.

7. Don't descend too steeply, -1800 feet per minute maximum. Even at this rate
you may need to extend the spoilers to check acceleration in descent.

8. Use spoilers to slow your descent when necessary, 260 tonnes of streamlined metal
going downhill builds up a lot of speed.

9. Below 250 kts indicated use one or two notches of flap when descending.

10. A real MD-11 would never land fully loaded, to do so would risk tire burst and/or undercarriage
damage. If you're on a short flight take-off with only 40-50% fuel load.

11. If you take-off fully loaded, and then you have to land before using up much fuel,
you'll have to dump some fuel to reduce weight. FSX does not have a fuel dump
option so you have to go to the aircraft menu in flight and manually reduce
the fuel amount to simulate a fuel dump.

12. Use 4 or 5 notches of flap on landing approach with undercarriage down.

13. Progressively add more flap as you approach the runway. Use spoilers to slow
down if necessary but be careful, they are very effective and you could end
up running out of airspeed.

14. Touch down at 140-160 kts depending on weight, deploy reverse thrust as soon
as the nose wheel is on the ground.
